Obsolete. to further.
[Middle English ferther, variant of further (originally) more, forward]
Usage farther and further. In formal English a distinction is occasionally made between farther and further. Farther is confined to expressions of physical distance: »

He lives farther from town than I do.

Further refers to abstract relationships of degree or quantity: »

She needs further schooling.

In informal English, the distinction is not usually kept.
